Rugby legend at region’s biggest sporting dinner

One of the greats of British rugby, Sir Ian McGeechan, will be guest speaker at next summer’s Players’ Dinner at Wymondham Rugby Club.

Sir Ian was one of the most important coaches ever to have taken charge of the British and Irish Lions, acting as head coach in 1989, 1993, 1997 and in 2009.

Around 600 guests will be at the dinner on 7th May. Sir Ian will be joined by BBC commentator Ian Robertson who will act as compere for the evening. Tickets have just gone on sale, priced at £65 each.

Peter Barry, Wymondham’s president, said:

“It is a fantastic honour for the club to get Sir Ian as our guest. He’s one of the greats of rugby who is never short of a few trenchant things to say about the game and its players.”

England coach Stuart Lancaster was the speaker at this summer’s dinner, which attracted a record attendance.

Sarah Softley, of Softley Events, said:

“This has now become the biggest sporting dinner in the Eastern Counties. It’s a great night for the club and its guests and we are delighted that we have been able to secure Sir Ian for the 2014 dinner.”

Sir Ian was capped 32 times for Scotland and has been director of rugby at Northampton, Wasps and Bath. He is currently chairman of Leeds Carnegie Rugby Club.
